Skaaplvei Battery Energy Storage System, Western Cape, South Africa

Project Overview
The Skaaplvei Battery Energy Storage System (BESS1) is a cornerstone of Eskom’s transition from coal to renewable energy storage. Located near Skaaplvei Power Station in Western Cape SouthAfrica, it will rank among the Africa’s largest battery systems, delivering up to 90MW. Covering 4,000m², the facility comprises 125 containerised batteries and 80 inverters. Pinggao engaged DBC Contractors to complete all civil and concrete works, including substation infrastructure.
The works encompassed trenching, structural footings, and highvoltage interfaces, delivered in stages under tight sequencing requirements. DBC Contractors’ selfperform capability and structured project systems ensured disciplined delivery across the scope.
Project Scope
DBC Contractors delivered the full civil and structural works package under a construct-only contract model. The scope included:
- Bulk and detailed earthworks across the entire battery site
- Drainage installation, including 1,400m of pipework and trenching
- Excavation and backfill for HV, LV and communications conduits
- Trenching and backfill for fire water infrastructure
- Bulk excavation following pylon removal
- Concrete works including slabs, footings, pole bases and foundation pads
- Installation of 7,300m of precast culverts for service access
- Road construction, including asphalt surfacing, kerbing and line marking
- Structural footings for battery containers, inverters, switch rooms, control room and NSP building
- Installation of pond lining
- Final landscaping across the project footprint
Skaapvlei Battery Energy Storage System Security Fence Installation
DBC Contractors delivered comprehensive security fence works at skaaplvei BESS Substation in vredendal Westerncape. The project focused on strengthening perimeter security and access control systems to protect critical high-voltage infrastructure.

Northcape Wind Farm Stage 1 set a new benchmark for wind energy in SA, featuring 20 Vestas V180-4.2MW turbines – the tallest in the state at 200m. the project delivers 95MW of renewable capacity. Engaged under a design and construct contract, DBC Contractors delivered the civil balance of plant (CBoP) works, including turbine foundations, internal roads, hardstands, a new substation, and a full O&M facility.
Completed in just 12 months, the project demanded precise sequencing and large-scale coordination. DBC Contractor’s in-house resources and direct delivery model ensured tight control across all program aspects, underscoring our growing role in SA’s renewable energy future.
Project scope
- DBC Contractors delivered a full CBoP design and construct scope, including:
- Detailed design of turbine foundations, internal roads, hardstand areas and O&M facility
- Site preparation including opening and operation of an on-site gravel pit
- Drill and blast operations for rock removal
- Public road intersection upgrades and site entry construction
- Construction of 15km of internal roads and crane hardstands
- Concrete foundations for 18 wind turbines
- Drainage systems and crossing structures across the site
- Construction of the O&M building and support infrastructure
- Management and operation of on-site batching plant
